Marathon motors engineering launched its latest electric car model, the Hyundai Kona SUV, an electric car charging station and other new products at an unveiling event held today. The launching is in line with the company’s policy of creating pollution-free environment through its slogan “Leading the way to Zero Emission” . It is to be recalled that the first model of its electric car series, Hyundai Ioniq, was launched in July 2020. Speaking at the event, owner of Marathon engineering, Major Haile G/Selassie said, “The event is symbolic that will herald Ethiopia’s leap into the heights of economic prosperity”. The unveiling event was attended by government officials (ministers and commissioners) and the minister of transport ministry, Dagmawit Moges, who was the guest of honor.

Hyundai’s approach will be vital in creating pollution-free environment and unlock Ethiopia’s hydro-electric power generation potential. Thus, the launching of more electric car models will have the potential to reduce the country’s expenditure on petroleum and retain valuable foreign currency.

A national symbol and pride, Hyundai engineering is one of a kind in its setup and among the few in Africa in being a-state-of-the-art company established with a huge investment capital in February, 2019. Since its establishment, the company has successfully assembled and introduced 14 different automobile models to the Ethiopian auto market.

Marathon Motors has been instrumental to the Ethiopian economy in terms of job creation and technology transfer efforts by giving opportunities to university graduates and technicians. It has also been recognized for its contributions in enhancing the skill sets of TVET college graduates and being one of the highest tax paying companies in Ethiopia. The event culminated with special recognition certificates and awards being handed out to designated partner banks and organizations, and a 1 million birr donation to the Ethiopian Defence Force.
