Ghana Launches Advanced Chip-Embedded Biometric Passport

Addis Ababa,Aprill 30/2025(ABN)

In a significant leap towards secure and modern travel documentation, Ghana has officially launched its next-generation chip-embedded biometric passport, aligning with global standards and improving the safety and efficiency of international travel for its citizens.

The new biometric passport, embedded with an electronic chip containing the holder’s biometric and biodata information, marks a major advancement in identity verification and fraud prevention. This innovation not only enhances border security but also facilitates faster processing at immigration checkpoints worldwide.

Speaking at the official launch ceremony in Accra, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, emphasized the government’s commitment to digitization and improved service delivery. “This passport launch signifies our national dedication to embracing technology that ensures the safety and dignity of every Ghanaian traveler,” she said.

The biometric chip stores critical data including facial recognition details, fingerprints, and a digital signature, all of which are essential for identity authentication and comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. It will also integrate seamlessly with e-gates at international airports, drastically reducing wait times for travelers.

The Passport Office of Ghana has also announced improvements in the application process, including upgraded online systems, enhanced data protection mechanisms, and shorter issuance timelines. Officials confirm that the new passport will gradually replace the older machine-readable version, with both remaining valid until their expiration dates.

The introduction of this technology also signals Ghana’s intention to enhance its global mobility score, opening up broader opportunities for its citizens in terms of visa-free travel and international cooperation.

Analysts applaud this move as a pivotal moment for West Africa, with Ghana setting a strong example for regional integration, digital transformation, and secure identification systems.
