Ethiopia has committed to playing a leading role in global wildlife conservation, calling for international collaboration to protect ecosystems and support communities. The Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA) marked World Wildlife Day and its 60th anniversary with events at the Gullele Botanic Garden, showcasing the country’s rich biodiversity and endemic species. The celebration, themed “Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet,” emphasized the link between ecosystem health and sustainable development.
EWCA Director General Kumara Wakijira highlighted Ethiopia’s progress in wildlife conservation but stressed the need for increased investment to address growing pressures on ecosystems. “The future of Ethiopia’s wildlife depends on sustainable financing to overcome future challenges,” he said. Kumara noted that EWCA is collaborating with local and international partners to secure financial support for conservation efforts.
Tourism State Minister Endegena Abebe emphasized that wildlife conservation is integral to economic development and cultural preservation. He called for collective action from global and local stakeholders to protect Ethiopia’s ecosystems. The event underscored the importance of innovative financing solutions and unified efforts to ensure a future where nature and humanity thrive together.
