Addis Ababa, February 21, 2025 (ABN)

The Ethiopian Immigration & Citizenship Service (ICS) has officially introduced a new electronic passport (e-passport), marking a significant step forward in modernizing the country’s identity and travel documentation systems.

During the launch event, the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Mr. Taye Atske Selassie, emphasized the importance of the new e-passport in elevating the nation’s global standing and enhancing security. “The introduction of e-passports will not only strengthen our country’s security but also ensure accountability and transparency by modernizing service delivery,” he stated. The President further highlighted the importance of self-sufficiency in a digitalized world, urging that all citizens who meet the criteria should have access to these advanced services.

Selamawit Dawit, Director General of the Ethiopian Immigration & Citizenship Service (ICS), elaborated on the features and benefits of the new e-passport. She noted that the document is equipped with advanced security features, including embedded chips that store personal information, enabling efficient and secure service delivery. “The e-passport addresses previous challenges and provides a more streamlined experience for citizens,” she said.

The new e-passport, produced by Japan’s Toppan Security Company—a firm with 125 years of expertise in the field—incorporates cutting-edge technology to meet global security standards. Selamawit Dawit also highlighted that the design of the e-passport showcases Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage and prominent tourist destinations, reflecting the nation’s identity on the global stage.

In addition to its security features, the e-passport is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting Ethiopia’s Digital Transformation Strategy, known as “Digital Ethiopia.” Selamawit Dawit emphasized that the e-passport aligns with global technological advancements and will significantly contribute to the country’s digitalization efforts.

The launch of the e-passport represents a milestone in Ethiopia’s commitment to innovation, security, and improved service delivery, positioning the country to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving digital world.
