$15.57 Billion in Focus: Ethiopia and World Bank Review 45 Development Projects

The Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with the World Bank, has officially launched the Annual Joint Project Portfolio Review, aimed at assessing the implementation of ongoing World Bank-supported projects in Ethiopia. The review focuses on evaluating progress, addressing challenges, and enhancing efficiency to ensure alignment with Ethiopia’s development priorities.

The event was opened by Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, H.E. Ahmed Shide, alongside Ms. Maryam Salim, World Bank Division Director for Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan. The session brought together key government officials, including ministers, state ministers, and heads of state-owned agencies responsible for implementing various development projects.

The opening ceremony emphasized the strong and long-standing partnership between Ethiopia and the World Bank, highlighting the Bank’s crucial financial and technical contributions to the country’s development agenda. The Bank currently supports over 45 projects across multiple sectors, with a total investment of $15.57 billion, covering critical areas such as water, transportation, urban development, agriculture, energy, health, education, social protection, and digital transformation.

The two-day review meeting, held from February 24 to 25, 2025, serves as a platform for open dialogue and knowledge exchange between the World Bank and Ethiopian government officials. Discussions focus on the current status of project implementation, key achievements, and challenges faced, with the aim of enhancing project execution and impact.

This annual review underscores a collaborative approach to ensuring that World Bank-funded projects effectively contribute to Ethiopia’s socio-economic growth and sustainable development. The insights gained will not only improve ongoing initiatives but also strengthen the strategic partnership between Ethiopia and the World Bank, paving the way for future collaborations.
